There’s something quite special about basking at the beach well into dusk, when the sun disappears behind the horizon and twilight begins to coat the surroundings in that balmy summer evening air. Dipping one’s toes in the mild sea post sunset, water warmed up by the day’s sun and waves lapping gently around the ankles, feels ever so different to swimming in the midday sun. It brings about a sense of nostalgia for childhood memories that aren’t quite there; isn’t it entrancing how our minds can take us places we feel so strongly existed in the past yet are nothing but a mere fragment of the imagination?
Sunset cocktails at Beach Bar Dodo
If, like us, you are too restless to recline on the sand until this glorious time, the next best thing is to experience it with a cocktail in hand, and observe the last of the day’s sun seekers slowly make their way home – all from the comfort of a sand-free setting. The best place for sunset cocktails in Dubrovnik, you wonder? Beach Bar Dodo. Wonderfully laid-back with an uninterrupted view of the stretch of sea ahead, I can’t think of a more fitting spot to relish in a sundowner and watch the world go by below.
The walk there itself is worth the journey. Mere steps from the centre of Old Town, it’s perched on the edge of a cliff and entered through, what is essentially, a hole in the wall. Equal parts whimsical and bohemian, it calls for an excuse to leave the charming city walls and discover one of the Dubrovnik hidden gems we stumbled upon on our suitcase escape in Croatia. Though only minutes away, the ambience here feels slower and more relaxed, the kind that can only be achieved when filled with local life.
So, pull up a chair, grab a cocktail and take in the mesmerising views across the Adriatic Sea. My recommendation? A cooling white wine spritzer or a tasty piña colada without the cream, preferably with your favourite person as a garnish on the side.
